She/her/hers

Dr Rowena Ryan

Rowena has worked in community health centres for 28 years. She has a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery as well as a Diploma of Social Health from the University of Melbourne, and a Diploma of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Rowena specialises in refugee health, antenatal care and chronic disease management. Working in community health for most of her medical life has enriched her idea of what good health care is and should be – holistic health care, taking into account the full social determinants of health.

Rowena likes working in a primary health team with colleagues from other health disciplines. She has been involved in initiatives to establish good refugee health care in primary practice.

Rowena has a Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and is a member of its Refugee Specific Interest Group. She is also a member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of the History of Medicine.
