free naloxone: saving lives from opioid overdose

Naloxone

The Victorian Government has made it easier to reduce harm from overdose by making naloxone, an opioid reversal medication, more accessible. Opioid overdoses can be caused by illegally obtained drugs, such as heroin, or legal drugs prescribed for pain such as oxycodone and fentanyl.

If a person overdoses on an opioid, naloxone can help revive them. Studies report that another person was present in 60 per cent of fatal overdose cases.  If someone you know is at risk of opioid overdose, you can now access naloxone and be trained to use it. It could save their life.

Funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, cohealth is providing naloxone for free until 30 June 2019 to any person who may be in the position to administer the drug to respond to an overdose. You do not need a health care card to get naloxone for free and it can be provided to family members, friends and carers of people who are at risk of overdosing.
